You write Contemporary Romance - why, exactly?
Oh, like you don't love love stories, too. I'm a happily married settled-down gal who hasn't had a first date in decades, but I still love love stories. And people! People are the best. So many thoughts and feelings, people have. And when I write contemporary romance, I get to explore all sorts of modern situations, and how people will handle them.
(I'll tell you a not-secret. I'm quite the feminist. Contemporary stories give me a chance to highlight issues that mean a lot to me, but don't worry - my agenda is well-hidden behind layers of sizzling romance.)
But I thought you were going to be a Serious Writer. Isn't that why your parents paid for the Masters in Creative Writing?
Oops. Sorry about that, Mom & Dad. Turns out I just really like writing sex scenes.
Yes, I have Credentials. And I read all that literary stuff, just as much as I read romance and mysteries and YA and - well, mostly those things. (I read a lot. Check out my reading blog and befriend me on Goodreads.) But most of those stories that pop into my head in the middle of the night or while I'm driving to work are romances. And the things that take up my head space are the things that fill up my computer's memory.
Besides which, I have pretty fierce feelings about romance being dismissed as hacky in any way. Some of the most amazingly crafted and compelling stories I've ever read (and remember, I read a lot of stories!) have been romances. (And let's not get me started on hacky non-genre writing, because I'm not trying to blow my rep as a generally nice person here.)
So where are all these stories of yours, then?
Right here!
